Collector Stories

Every drawing disappears twice: first into the charcoal, then through the door of my studio. After that, it begins a life I can no longer see, watching different rooms, holding different silences, and becoming attached to memories that were never mine. This page is where some of those signals return, photographs and stories from the people now living with the work. Proof that even after leaving, it is still receiving.

I’ve never owned a real piece of art before but something about this just connected with me. I see depression and darkness, but also hope—the search for a little light in the darkest of places.

To me the spaceman represents feeling lost and alone in an endless, unfamiliar universe, while the cat is the opposite: a familiar companion, offering comfort and connection. Together they capture something beautiful to me: loneliness and companionship, darkness and light, feeling lost yet still searching for hope.

For the first time in a long time it inspired me to write again -
We listened to the light
Not because it was loud,
But because it was still enough
To hold the dark at bay,
And prove that even underground,
Hope can light the way.

It has pride of place in my own little space, where I can look at it daily and feel a sense of calm, hope and connection.

Im a big fan of the art style in general. The charcoal drawing with some white highlights looks amazing, even though its just a print version. The Picture itself just gives me a certain, undiscribable, mood. I specially like the distopian feeling and the drawing of the cat and of the whales. Overall im very happy with the quality, and the meaning of the picture. Maybe also note this was the first ever piece of art that I bought for myself.

I consider myself lucky to have two of StillReceiving’s originals: The Sky Was Deeper Than the Sea and We Found the End of a Promise. Both hold very special meaning to me.

Life is difficult. None of use are here by choice, and yet we are all collectively born with the understanding that we exist to make the lives of those around us better. We laugh together, we cry together, we mourn together, we play together. We are a social species.

But there are times when things get broken. Trust gets shattered, and we become familiar with the bitter sting of betrayal. It’s here, where our reality contradicts so sharply with what we know of the good of humanity, that loneliness resides.

Oh to be an astronaut with her cat soaring the sky! What a wickedly lovely idea. Look at the broken image of scary monsters in the city below, surely we’re safe up here from any harm they can do to us. Let’s escape for a little while on our boat of security and we’ll sail the clouds and count the harmless whales as we go. It’s calm up here.

One of the things I’ve learned is that loneliness can be such a dangerous treasure to keep. I guard my security jealously, nobody can take it away from me unless I give it up. I get to choose. I didn’t get the choice before, so I’m holding it tightly now. I promised myself I wouldn’t put myself in situations where I could get hurt again.

But oh look how tightly I hold it, like a gallant knight taking her last stand. How despondent, how calamitous! Let’s pause for our poor fallen comrade, holding so tightly to her promise that she lost herself in the process. Let’s grieve her, for surely there was a time when she laughed, surely there was a time when she was full of life. Surely she loved somebody in her life, and surely she’s been loved. Does her family know she’s lost? Do they see her?

We certainly see her, us Astronauts of the Lonely World. We understand because we feel it too. We have made a home in that little hollow between humanity and reality.

Thank you for the adventures StillReceiving, and thank you for your art that so perfectly encapsulates what it is to be a human living in contradiction

This artwork holds a deep meaning for me as someone who’s tried to shake the hand but never succeeded (thankfully). There is the essence of hope blended with a curious darkness within this artwork that really hit home for me. It hit several layers of meaning, most notably a dance with death mixed with the ability to make friends with your demons/darkness and accept its existence even if it’s not your time to shake the hand of it itself. For me it’s the meeting point of hope of finding your way back, while accepting where you are and where your journey has lead you, knowing one day it will be your time, but that time just isn’t quite yet. Thank you Stillreceiving for putting into art what words cannot describe. A piece of art I’m very proud to have in my home!

The artwork is symbolic of the near misses and second chances I’ve been afforded in life. I feel like I’ve come so close to really messing up in terms of legal / physical consequences and every time I’ve been lucky. Like it’s not my time yet. It makes me remember that I am home and have no where else to be but here and now.

The man alone with his cat staring into the sky at something that shouldn't be but just standing and accepting it just hit me. It inspired feelings and emotions like no other art piece I've ever seen. This is also the first piece of art I've ever bought or owned
